ATV and UTV Rider Training (CSC Certification)

We provide professional ATV / UTV training in association with the Canada Safety Council (CSC) in order to develop safe confident off-road operators.

Whether you’re a seasoned weekend warrior, new recreational rider or a commercial operator, this course will offer you invaluable knowledge in the safe operations of your off-road vehicle in a multitude of terrain types and trail conditions.

The Canada Safety Council Operator Safety Training course (ATV or UTV) is taught by an experienced certified instructor and is good for life once completed! This is the only nationally recognized certification meeting and complying with all commercial work sector regulations. Our Driving School offers the CSC certification course all year round.

WHAT THE COURSE CAN OFFER

The rider will gain knowledge from a certified CSC Instructor based on field-tested techniques, to provide a fun and safe way to learn how to properly operate their ATV or UTV (Side by Side).

INCLUDES:

  • How to prepare for a fun safe ride with all the proper protective riding gear, and any other gear you may need.
  • General riding instruction and techniques such as proper posture, gear shifting, breaking, turning and parking.
  • How to get familiar with your ATV or UTV, including proper pre-ride inspections of your vehicle, familiarization with your controls and how to properly and safely start your vehicle.
  • Techniques to properly access hazardous situations while riding.
  • How to assess the terrain, spot hazards while riding and how to avoid them safely
  • How and when to use advanced techniques such as the K-turn and U-turn
  • How to ride up a hill and over obstacles which may obstruct the trail.
  • Introduction to Safety Awareness, and off-road operations.
  • The safe way to load and unload machine in the back of vehicles or trailers including safe winching techniques
  • Advances skills including sharp turns at high speeds, quick turns and swerves and breaking quickly safely.
  • At the end of the lessons you will take a small ride with the instructor in real off-road terrain and trails to practice and reinforce what you have learned with the course.

A course material handbook is provided for the student to take home and review afterwards. Upon completion, the student will receive a CSC Certificate of Completion, get registered for future updates and receive a CSC sticker.

Requirements

ATV/UTV REQUIREMENTS

The course will require the rider to bring a vehicle (ATV or UTV) that is in good working order and able to pass a TCLOC inspection prior to being eligible for the course.

  • A TCLOC inspection sheet will be provided with the registration package, this must be handed in prior to participation.
    • T- Tires and wheels are in good condition, all the tire bolts are tight. (No overly aggressive mud tires will be allowed on the course.)
    • C– Controls and Cables are all in good working order
    • L– Lights and Electrics are all in good working order
    • O– Oil and Fuel, you have enough in your vehicle to complete the course
    • C– Chain, Drive Shaft, Chassis and suspension, all these must be in good working order.
  • The Operator must be able to comfortably reach and operate all the controls of the vehicle.
  • The instructor reserves the right to refuse any ATV or UTV that does not meet safe standards for the course.
  • If your current machine doesn’t meet the course standards, rental ATV’s and UTV’s are available for a fee.

Protective Equipment REQUIREMENTS

  • DOT or SNELL approved helmet
  • Shatter resistant eyewear such as off-road goggles, safety glasses etc.
  • Strong sturdy gloves
  • Long sleeve shirt or jacket
  • Over the ankle shoes or boots
  • Long sturdy pants such as jeans
  • *NO SNEAKERS OR OPEN TOE SHOES

Age REQUIREMENTS

6-11 years

  • Parent or Guardian must be present at all times
  • Vehicle must be less than 70cc
  • The operator must be able to comfortably reach and operate all the vehicles controls.

12-15 years

  • Parent or Guardian should attend or observe the course
  • Vehicle must be between 70cc – 90cc
  • The operator must be able to comfortably reach and operate all the vehicles controls.

+16 years

  • No parental requirements
  • Vehicle must be greater than 90cc
  • The operator must be able to comfortably reach and operate all the vehicles controls.

PRICING

All prices are in Canadian Funds, HST included. Gas is provided for the rental vehicles. Group, commercial and family discounts are available.

NOTE: Any student renting the equipment is responsible to cover any damage which may occur.

Workplace / Industrial / Construction regulations

In the industrial and construction industries it is mandatory that the Employer ensures all operators of mobile equipment or vehicles be competent persons as per Industrial Reg. 851 Sect 54(1)(d) and Construction Reg. 213 Sect 96 (1).  Our course satisfies all requirements to meet these legislations, providing your workers with the proper training and techniques to be competent operators.

As for Employers, it is your duty according to the Occupational Health and Safety act to instruct, inform and supervise workers to protect their health and safety [clause 25(2)(a)] this includes the use of off-road vehicles such as ATV’s and UTV’s.

Help prevent workplace injuries or fatalities by providing your employees with our CSC certified ATV or UTV operator course. Prepare them for the endless types of unpredictable terrain your workers will face while utilizing these vehicles.

Where and how can I take the course?

In-class lessons are offered yearlong at Our Driving School in Sault Ste Marie. Off-site demonstration locations will change based on time of year.

What do I need for the course?

We require that you have the following,

Can I rent an ATV or UTV?

Yes, if you’re unsure that your ATV or UTV will not pass inspection, or you don’t currently own an ATV or UTV, rental vehicles are available for use.

Do you offer off-site training?

We do offer off site training, where we will bring the course to you saving employee travel expenses.  Please contact us for more info on personalized training for large groups.

Do you offer private lessons?

Private lessons are available upon request, please contact us for more information or to book a private or group certification.

Are these lessons good for children?

Yes, we recommend having your child register if they’re unexperienced with the proper, safe way to use an ATV or UTV. The requirements include:
